Join the Youth Services department during April for Reading Without Walls. A nationwide reading challenge created by National Ambassador of Young People’s Literature Gene Luen Yang. Reading Without Walls encourages readers of all ages to choose books outside of their comfort zones. From the casual reader to the bookworm, everyone can benefit from an exercise in reading diversely.
Challenges include:
- Read a book about a character who doesn’t look like you or live like you.
- Read a book about a topic you don’t know much about.
- Read in a format that you don’t normally read for fun – i.e. a chapter book, graphic novel, a book in verse, a biography, non-fiction, or an audiobook.
Check out some of our picks for Reading Without Walls Month for ideas or suggestions to guide you on your reading adventure. You may also choose to consult our previous lists, such as Immigration, Tolerance, and Belongings, Board Books and Picture Books that Celebrate Multiculturalism and Diversity, the PEFF Environmental Film Festival Youth Recommendations, Staff Picks for Black History Month, Women’s History Month, and many more.
Participants will receive an activity packet to track progress. Participate in creative activities, such as making your own comic strip or acting out an original scene. Activities may be done alone, but we encourage you to get family and friends involved as well. You’ll also have the opportunity to write down your favorite books, which we will add to a communal jar of book suggestions. All participants who complete the challenge will receive an official Reading Without Walls Certificate of Excellence, signed by one of our librarians. What are you waiting for? Visit the Youth Services desk today to register yourself and your child for Reading Without Walls.
