We invite you to check out this month’s PPL Youth Services recommendations for activities, resources and new books in the library collection for children up to 5 years old and their families.
National Grandparents Day is on Sept. 11 and what better way to celebrate than by sharing books together! Create a special storytime experience all about the grandpeople in your child’s life with our newly added Storytime At Home: Grandparents list of recommended books, songs and activities. Join us in the virtual story room as we share books, songs and rhymes all about the grandpeople in our lives with Storytime Shorts: Grandparents playlist on the library’s YouTube channel.
Beginning in September, the library will be adding more in-person storytimes to our schedule. Join us every Wednesday and Tuesday for Storytime! at 10:30 a.m. for children ages 2 and up, and Baby Storytime at 11:30 a.m. for children ages 0-24 months. We’ll have fun sharing books, songs and rhymes together in the library’s 3rd floor Story Room. Attendees of Baby Storytime are encouraged to stay after storytime for Baby Playgroup and continue the fun with free play and socialization just for babies and toddlers. In addition, Saturday Storytime for children ages 2 and up returns every Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. beginning Sept. 17.
Children ages 3 and up and their families are invited to join us on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 10:30 a.m. for a mindfulness-themed outdoor story time at Community Park North Amphitheater. Connect with nature, your mind, body and emotions as we share books, songs, rhymes and activities focusing on various aspects of mindfulness and nature. After storytime, families are encouraged to explore the nearby walking trails in Community Park North. In case of rain, we will reschedule this event on Sept. 11 at 10:30 a.m. This event is presented in partnership with the Mayors Wellness Campaign Community Health Initiative.
Hurry, Little Tortoise, Time for School! by Carrie Finison
September is a great time of year for exploring picture books about going to school, especially if you have a young child starting school for the very first time. This new picture book is a sweet addition to the many wonderful books about the first day of school. School mornings are often a blur as we rush out the door to get to school on time. But as the title character, Little Tortoise, and her schoolmates learn from their teacher, Mr. Sloth, “Sometimes we’re fast, and sometimes we’re last. The important thing is that we’re all here.” And as a special bonus, author Carrie Finison will be attending this year’s Princeton Children’s Book Festival on Saturday, Oct. 8.
Great Books for Babies and Toddlers and Great Books for Preschool
To discover even more wonderful books for babies, toddlers and preschoolers, be sure to check out our newly updated staff recommendations, “Great Books for Babies and Toddlers” and “Great Books for Preschool.” These lists include a sampling of our favorite books, both old treasures and new gems, to share with your little ones. Happy reading!
